Registration Holds

Students with holds on their registration will not have access to register until the initiating offices have released the holds. Those who attempt to register before the holds have been released will receive a message indicating which offices have placed holds on their registration. Prior to their registration, students may check for holds on AccessPlus.

Registration Hold Types

 

     Academic Probation

  • Description: This hold is placed on a student's record when an academic standing issue arises. 
  • Intent: Ensure students with an academic standing issue consult with the appropriate staff member to address their registration/course selection given their current academic standing.
  • Action Required by Student:  Student must meet with their advisor to determine appropriate schedule adjustments and ensure completion of the Academic Intervention Self-Assessment.
  • Ramification: Student will not be able to register for a future term until the hold is resolved. In some instances, a student will not be able to receive an official transcript until the hold is resolved.

     Accounts Receivable Office

  • Description: This hold is placed on a student's record when a student's university bill (ubill) is not current and the balance is $200 or greater.
  • Intent: Ensure students pay their university bill and make their account current.
  • Action Required by Student:  Pay balance on university bill (ubill) or set up a payment plan.
  • Ramification: Student will not be able to register for a future term until hold is resolved. In some instances, a student will not be able to receive an official transcript until the hold is resolved.

     Advisor

  • Description: This hold is placed on a student's record to review their academic planning/progress and receive their RAN (where applicable).
  • Intent: Ensure that a student meets with their academic advisor to properly address their registration/enrollment plans and academic progress.
  • Action Required by Student:  Student must meet with their advisor to develop a registration plan.
  • Ramification: Student will not be able to register for the upcoming term until hold is resolved.

     Admissions Office

  • Description: This hold is placed on a student's record due to additional document requirements such as an official transcript, degree statement, mark sheet, ACT score, or SAT score. Other reasons for an admissions registration hold is an applicant who does not meet ISU's English proficiency requirement or for not completing orientation.
  • Intent: Obtain required official documents necessary to complete their admission, meet ISU's English proficiency requirement, or complete orientation.
  • Action Required by Student:  Submit documentation, demonstrate English proficiency, or attend orientation.
  • Ramification: Student will not be able to register for a future term until hold is resolved. In some instances, a student will not be able to receive an official transcript or diploma until the hold is resolved.

     Dean of Students Office

  • Description: This hold is placed on a student's record when there is some action or contact required by the Dean of Students Office.
  • Intent: Ensure student completes whatever action is required.
  • Action Required by Student:  Contact the Dean of Students Office to determine what steps need to occur to resolve the hold. 
  • Ramification: Student will not be able to register for a future term until hold is resolved.

     Financial Aid Consortium Agreement

  • Description: This hold is placed on a student's record when a transcript of the classes for which a student is receiving financial aid has not been sent to and accepted by ISU as transfer credit before another consortium agreement can be reviewed.
  • Intent: Ensures transcript from a non-ISU institution as part of a Financial Aid consortium agreement has been sent to and accepted as transfer credit at ISU.
  • Action Required by Student:  Request transcript from host institution be sent to ISU Admissions Office (as home institution).
  • Ramification: Student will not be able to register for a future term until hold is resolved. In some instances, a student will not be able to receive an official transcript or diploma until the hold is resolved.

     Graduate College

  • Description: This hold is placed on a student's record for reasons such as when a student has graduated with a master's or Ph.D., a student has not been registered for more than 4 consecutive semesters, when removed from degree-seeking graduate status, or when GPA falls below 3.0.
  • Intent: Ensure student resolves hold specific criteria in order to be in good standing.
  • Action Required by Student:  Varies - contact Graduate College for specific requirements.
  • Ramification: Student will not be able to register for a future term until hold is resolved. In some instances, a student will not be able to receive an official transcript or diploma until the hold is resolved.

     International Students & Scholars Office

  • Description: This hold is placed on an international student's record when that student must respond to an ISSO request requiring student action.  
  • Intent: Ensure international students meet immigration status requirements in order to remain legally in the U.S.
  • Action Required by Student:  Student must resolve an ISSO-specific issue such as ISSO check-in, complete a mandatory health screening, meet with an advisor to resolve an immigration status issue or resolve other issues as needed.
  • Ramification: Student will not be able to register for a future term until the hold is resolved. In some instances, a student will not be able to receive an official transcript or diploma until the hold is resolved.

     Loans Receivable Office

  • Description: This hold is placed on a student's record when a student's federal campus-based or university long term loan is 30 or more days past due.
  • Intent: Ensure student provides a payment in order to make their account current. Non-current accounts are reported to the credit bureau as negative and no additional Title IV funding can be given to the student. 
  • Action Required by Student:  Bring loan current.
  • Ramification: Student will not be able to register for a future term until hold is resolved. In some instances, a student will not be able to receive an official transcript or diploma until the hold is resolved.  
  • Contact: 
    • This hold is placed if an exit interview is not completed.
      • Go to www.myloancounseling.com to complete the information.

    • This hold is placed once your Federal Perkins Loan or Health Professions Student Loan becomes 60 days past due.
      • You may call University Accounting Services, our billing servicer, at 800-723-2210 to determine the amount past due and make payment

      Medical

  • Description: This hold is placed on a student's record when a withdrawal for medical reasons occurs. This process occurs under the Medical Withdrawal Policy.
  • Intent: Ensure student completes required contact and provides any required medical documentation when returning from a medical withdrawal.
  • Action Required by Student:  Submit documentation and attend any required meeting(s). 
  • Ramification: Student will not be able to register for a future term until hold is resolved.

     Multicultural Student Affairs Office

  • Description: This hold is placed on a student's record when a Multicultural Vision Program or George Washington Carver Program scholar falls below a certain GPA.
  • Intent: Ensures proper communication with student regarding risk of scholarship loss as well as a notification tool regarding Financial Aid requirements.
  • Action Required by Student: Student must complete a scholarship appeal application.
  • Ramification: Student will not be able to register for a future term until hold is resolved. In some instances, a student will not be able to receive an official transcript or diploma until the hold is resolved.

     Smart Start 

  • Description: This hold is placed on a student’s record when they have not met the requirements of the Smart Start program. Participation in Smart Start is a condition of the student’s admission to the University, as stated in their offer of admission. By accepting their admission, the student agreed that they would participate in this program. 
  • Intent: Ensure the student meets participation requirements. 
  • Action Required by Student:  Contact the Academic Success Center to determine what they need to do to resolve the hold.
  • Ramification: Student will not be able to register for a future term until hold is resolved.

     Student Health 

  • Description: This hold is placed on a student's record due to missing required vaccination documentation. 
  • Intent: Ensure all measles vaccine requirements are met in order to protect the health of the ISU student body and meet requirements of the Iowa Department of Public Health. 
  • Action Required by Student:  Provide proof of immunization or immunity to measles.
  • Ramification: Student will not be able to register for a future term until hold is resolved. In some instances a student will not be able to receive an official transcript or diploma until the hold is resolved.
